Sonnets Good and True

INTRODUCING THE SONNET MAN’S
TWELFTH EDITION

This is THE SONNET MAN’s Twelfth Edition.
Hi, I am THE SONNET MAN (the UK one; the poet not the performer/ teacher).and this is the twelfth website edition of sonnets I have written.
I am not keeping count now, but have, I believe, done more than 6,000 sonnets over the last fifteen years. There are just over 100 on each website so in excess of 1,200 are now on the Internet. A wide range of my interests are covered.
You can access the poems, first by clicking on the drop down menu (three short horizontal lines), and from there either Poems or Archives.
Do not feel the need to read many or all, all at once. One or just a few, at a time, may be enough to enjoy or get you thinking. You can always come back and look at others, if and when it suits you.
I repeat what I have said before, I am probably one of the most prolific poets in the English language at present. But despite not being ‘regarded’ by the mainstream, I do believe there is a considerable degree of quality contained in my sonnets on display.
I put in one of my sonnets that writing these is like an ‘act of defiance’ on my part. That is so, but I am still figuring out what about.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy reading at least one or two on this website, perhaps finding them meaningful or thought-provoking. I make no apology for any controversy that may be associated. That is poetic licence.
Please provide information (title of the website) to anyone you know who might like to look at these sonnets.

PREVIOUS EDITIONS

Here are the previous website editions of mine.

WHAT IS A SONNET?

A Sonnet is a poem, but with a specific structure and derives from the Italian word “sonnetto”, meaning “little song”.

Mine follow the pattern of 14 lines, 10 syllables a line,
and the rhyming pattern for verses of    –    abab   cdcd   efef   gg.

I am interested in putting meaning to mine rather than emphasis on alternate syllables, which is the case with more traditional sonnets.

ARE THESE SONNETS COPYRIGHTED?

Like the sonnets on my other websites, the ones on this one are my intellectual property.
However, I would be happy for any to be used, as felt fit,
provided they are accredited to The Sonnet Man or the relevant website address.

If for a commercial purpose, though, please seek my permission.

I can be contacted by the email address:
info@todmordensonnets.co.uk

No insulting or irrelevant ones please. They will be deleted.
There may be a delay in my responding, but I will do so, eventually.

TO ACCESS THE SONNETS, PRESS THE SYMBOL AND USE THE DROPDOWN MENU. EITHER ‘SONNETS’ OR ‘ARCHIVE’ WILL GET TO THEM.

I HOPE YOU ENJOY THE SONNETS (if not all, then at least some) ON THIS WEBSITE.

Here are the first two, introductory, sonnets. For this website, a sort of Swearing In

The Skill of Listening

A real skill is listening to people.
Really listening. Hearing what is said.
Conversing, of course, is reasonable.
But understanding, more important yet.

It is, it could be said, observation.
Recognising the serious point made.
May perhaps need some clarification.
Agreement or empathy be displayed.

If disagree, that’s another matter.
May explain reason, or just let it pass.
But, not agree with simply to flatter.
Can give advice, though, whether or not asked.

Listen and observe, without distraction,
before, if right to, turn into action.

The Inspiration

The inspiration, somewhere to be found.
A communication, there to be had.
Get things going, even if not astound.
Looking back, may think that was not ‘half-bad’.

The inspiration, what I imagine
mind does. A conjuring-up of extra.
Enthuses. An idea can fashion.
Uses reason, to beyond it, go far.

The inspiration, in thought get infused.
Encouraged; think the not thought possible.
Can be allowed a bending of the rules.
Stretching normal to incomparable.

In activity or contemplation,
able to access the inspiration.
